Private Boxes

You can rent a Private Box at either Envoy House or Smith Street in Guernsey, Victoria Street in Alderney or the Avenue in Sark (subject to availability). When renting a Private Box, you will be issued with a specific private box address and postcode, which is different to your physical address, and must be used in all your correspondence. Incorrectly addressed mail may be delayed or returned to sender.

Private Box holders are issued with a key to the box and a check card for collecting Special Delivery mail items. Mail received bearing the full and correct private box address will be available for collection from the times stated below. Please note that Express/Signed For items cannot be collected before these times and parcels are not normally placed in your box but will be delivered separately to your normal postal address.

Please note: Mail can be collected earlier than 8:15am from Envoy House but Guernsey Post’s quality control processes will not have been completed. In these circumstances, customers are requested to check mail collected from their boxes before leaving Envoy House.

  • The Private Box facility will be granted only for the permanent address, in the Bailiwick, at which an applicant resides or carries on business. A change of address must be notified to Guernsey Post.
  • Subject to the availability of boxes, there is no maximum number of Private Boxes per customer per permanent address.
  • The box number and dedicated postcode will become part of the address and should be shown on the holder’s letterheads, invoices, statements etc. Incorrectly addressed mail may be delayed or returned to sender.
The postcode used in the address should be that of the Private Box NOT that of the premises itself.
  • Guernsey Post will not disclose the full address of the user of the Private Box to anyone requesting the information unless there is a legal requirement to do so or disclosure is made under Section 29, Crime and Taxation, of the Data Protection (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law, 2001.
  • A key to the box will be issued to the holder so that only his or her representative may obtain the correspondence.
  • A checkcard will also be issued as Special Delivery, Express and Signed For items will not be put into the box but will be handed over to the person presenting the card.
  • It is essential, therefore, to safeguard the key and card against loss or misuse: this is the responsibility of the box-holder. If lost, a charge of £75 will be raised to replace the lock and issue the new key and card.
  • To maintain optimum security, no additional keys or cards will be issued however the box holder may have additional keys cut at his expense. The check card and keys are to be surrendered when the box is given up.
  • Items may not be collected outside the normal opening hours specified above.
  • Items must be collected at least once per month. Guernsey Post may treat an item that is not collected within this time as undeliverable in accordance with the undeliverable letter policy outlined in ‘Customer Information’.
  • There is a chargeable three month notice period. During this period, or for up to four months after it, all of the mail may be redirected to a single address or another Private Box (click here for information on our Redirection service).
  • After the expiration of any mail redirection service following on from or concurrent with the notice period for the Private Box facility, all mail received will be deemed to be undeliverable and either returned to sender or destroyed in accordance with Guernsey Post’s undeliverable mail policy.

Please Note: Guernsey Post cannot offer redirection facilities unless the Private Box is closed. All items must be redirected to a new single address in this instance, or another Private Box. This arrangement can be maintained for a maximum of four months.

Guernsey Post reserves the right to refuse an application for a private box without any explanation, to close the box at any time, or to vary, change or amend all or any of the terms and conditions pertaining to Private Box facilities offered by Guernsey Post.
