From 5th-9th September 2011, 27 Guernsey Post employees will be embarking on a cycle challenge to help raise much needed funds for Help a Guernsey Child.
The challenge involves cycling around the island with the aim of covering 876 miles in total - that's the equivalent of the distance from Lands End to John O'Groats. There is however a twist to this cycle challenge because no lightweight, 21 gear bikes are allowed; all the cycling will take place on post bikes!
Postie Paul Wakeham, who arranged the challenge said:"Cycling around the island on a heavy framed post bike with just 3 gears is not going to be an easy task, so I'm really pleased that everyone at Guernsey Post has been so supportive and eager to get involved at all levels of the business. We hope to raise over £2000 for Help a Guernsey Child.
Our [Guernsey Post's] Supporting Together Committee have kindly offered to match any money we raise up to £1000 and the Deerhound and Houmet Tavern are generously supplying us with refreshments on the way round."
Help a Guernsey Child was set up in 2001 by Island FM to help disadvantaged local children and young people. Every penny that the charity receives goes directly to the needs of local children.
If you would like to sponsor Guernsey Post's cycle challenge, Guernsey Post's Smith Street and Envoy House Post Offices will be accepting donations (cash or cheque*) over the counter.
