Update: Changes to How We Send Standard Mail to the UK (From July 2026)

Guernsey Post is making changes to how standard mail is transported to the UK. These changes will take effect in July 2026, with the final outbound flight on Friday 3 July. Until then, all services continue exactly as normal, and customers do not need to do anything differently.

From 6 July, standard mail will no longer travel on the dedicated mail plane. Instead, it will be sent via our reliable and well-established sea-freight network. This change is being made because rising supply chain and operating costs mean it is no longer viable to run a dedicated aircraft five days a week.

We know how important next-day delivery is for some customers, and we are working with our commercial partners to secure a daily air service for scheduled flights.

These changes will also support new competitively priced parcel options launching in July, made possible by efficiencies created through the move to sea.

To help customers understand what this means in practice, we have provided detailed FAQs below.

Why is the mail plane stopping?
Rising supply-chain costs mean operating a dedicated aircraft five days a week is no longer cost-effective. Moving standard mail to our established sea freight network (from July) provides a more reliable and financially sustainable option. The final outbound flight is scheduled for Friday 3 July.

Will next day delivery still be available?
We understand how important next-day delivery is for some of our customers, and we are working to secure a daily service using our commercial partners for scheduled flights.

How long will standard mail take?
Customers should allow an additional 24 hours for their items to connect with UK deliveries.

Are parcel services affected?
No. Parcel services remain unchanged, and there is positive news for customers:
· Parcel rates are frozen for 2026.
· New competitively priced tracked parcel options will be introduced in July, supported by the cost efficiencies generated through the move to sea.

Will this reduce the quality of service?
No. The sea freight network is well established and reliable, offering predictable dispatch windows and consistent entry into UK delivery routes.

Why did Guernsey Post previously say the plane would continue?
In 2024, the assessment supported retaining the aircraft. Since then, costs and operating conditions have changed. The updated review shows that moving mail to sea — while protecting next day delivery by air — is now the most reliable and financially sustainable approach for the Bailiwick.

Does this affect Alderney or Sark mail?
Local and inter-island services remain unchanged. Mail from Alderney and Sark will continue to travel to Guernsey as normal, and once it enters the Guernsey despatch process it will follow the same revised sea-based timings to connect with deliveries in the UK. Incoming mail to Alderney and Sark is unaffected; it will continue to arrive via the existing arrangements.

Will this affect incoming mail from the UK?
No. Incoming mail arrangements remain exactly the same. All mail coming into the island already travels via the robust, well established sea freight network, and no incoming mail currently arrives by plane. Customers will not see any difference to incoming delivery times or processes.

Will there be any changes for business customers?
No immediate changes. Many business customers value predictable dispatch schedules, and the sea network supports this. We have strong working relationships with key business customers and will work closely with them to ensure a smooth, well-planned transition.

Guernsey Post has announced upcoming changes to its postal tariffs, which will take effect from 1st April 2026.

While letter prices will increase, all parcel rates will remain unchanged. This is part of our ongoing commitment to support the full range of customers we serve – from islanders posting everyday items to established business and retail customers and our growing e-commerce community. We expect this new service to be especially helpful for businesses and individuals who sell through platforms such as eBay and Vinted."

Guernsey Post Confirms Outcome of Island-wide Post Box Consultation

Guernsey Post has confirmed its island-wide network of post boxes will be reduced from 142 to 59 following a public consultation. The decision forms part of the company’s wider transformation programme to ensure postal services remain efficient, sustainable and fit for the future.

The consultation invited feedback on the proposed closure of up to 96 boxes and ran from 15 August to 12 September. More than 500 responses were received via paper forms, emails, phone calls, and an online consultation form. As a result of this feedback, 14 of the boxes originally earmarked for closure will now be retained, ensuring continued access in key locations.

Chief Executive Steve Sheridan said, “We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to share their views during the consultation. Every response was carefully considered and played a key role in shaping the final decision. We believe the revised network offers a sensible balance between customer accessibility and operational efficiency, ensuring postal services remain sustainable for the future.”

Just under 30% of respondents expressed concern about the loss of the heritage and landmark value of Guernsey’s iconic post boxes,

Mr Sheridan added, “We understand how important the blue Guernsey post box is to our island’s heritage, and we are committed to preserving that legacy. As part of this, we will be replacing the timed collection plates with plaques that share the historical stories behind selected boxes, such as the one at Fort Road, which we now know still bears visible damage from bullet holes during the Occupation. These stories are an important part of our community’s history, and we want to ensure they’re not lost”.

Just under 60% of respondents expressed concern about the convenience and accessibility of their nearest post box. In response, Guernsey Post has retained over a third of the boxes linked to those concerns. While some boxes attracted fewer individual responses, they raised important points and valid points – such as Box 125 at The Longstore, which was highlighted for its 24-hour accessibility.

As part of the changes, Box 139 on Jerbourg Road will be relocated to Manor Stores to improve accessibility in that area. Following strong feedback from residents near Box 95 on Rocquaine Road, Guernsey Post has decided not to proceed with its relocation, and the box will remain in its current position. For Box 115 at Rue Sauvage, Guernsey Post was unable to secure the preferred relocation site, so the box will remain in place for the time being.

Letter volumes in Guernsey have declined by nearly 60% over the last 10 years, including a 15% drop compared to last year alone. This trend mirrors patterns seen in the UK and other jurisdictions. This shift in consumer behaviour is driving postal operators to reassess infrastructure and adapt to changing needs.

A full list of the post boxes that will remain in service is available here. All remaining post boxes will have updated collection times, which will be clearly displayed on each box. These new times will take effect from Monday, 4 November, and the boxes scheduled for closure will be closed during the course of that same week.

Temporary suspension of postal goods to the USA

Guernsey Post has temporarily suspended all postal goods shipped to the United States with immediate effect, following significant changes to U.S. import regulations. Letters and documents are unaffected.

On 30 July, the U.S. Government announced a new executive order that alters customs obligations for goods entering the country. One of the key changes is the suspension of the de minimis exemption, which previously allowed goods valued under $800 to enter the U.S. duty-free. This exemption will end on Friday, 29 August, meaning all goods shipped to the USA will now require duties to be paid in advance, regardless of their value.

Due to the uncertainty surrounding how these duties will be collected and what additional information may be required, Guernsey Post has made the decision to pause postal services for goods to the U.S. This measure is being taken to protect customers from potential delays, unexpected charges, or rejected shipments.

Guernsey Post is actively working with Royal Mail and other partners to develop a reliable solution that meets the new requirements and will make this available to customers as soon as possible. In the meantime, Guernsey Post is reaching out to business customers directly to provide further information and assistance with accessing FedEx services, which may offer a suitable alternative for some commercial shipping needs.

Guernsey Post announces consultation on lowering the number of roadside post boxes

Guernsey Post has announced a proposal to reduce the number of roadside post boxes across the island, in response to a significant decline in usage over recent years. The initiative forms part of the company’s broader transformation programme to ensure its postal services remain efficient, sustainable and fit for the future.

Under the proposal, 96 of the island’s 141 roadside post boxes are being considered for closure, with 42 retained and a further three relocated to better serve local communities. Usage data shows that more than two-thirds of the boxes identified for potential closure receive an average of only five or less items per day, while the remainder typically handle no more than ten. These figures highlight a significant shift in how islanders use postal services and help inform the approach to shaping a more efficient and sustainable postal network.

Steve Sheridan, Chief Executive of Guernsey Post, said “We recognise that this proposal may be met with understandable reservations from some customers, and we want to assure everyone that this decision has not been taken lightly. We are committed to consulting carefully with the public before making any final decisions. This proposed change reflects how people are using our services today and supports our goal of operating efficiently while maintaining accessible and reliable postal services.”

The Company has prioritised retaining boxes in key community locations, such as near shops, banks and other public amenities to ensure continued accessibility for customers.

An informal consultation period will begin on Friday, 15th August and run until Friday, 12th September. During this time, customers are invited to share their views and help shape any final decision.

Each post box identified for potential closure will carry a notice advising of the proposal and how to provide feedback. Full details, including a list of affected boxes and an online feedback form, will be available at www.guernseypost.com from the start of the consultation.

Mr Sheridan added, “The consultation is a genuine opportunity for the community to influence the outcome. Our goal is to make thoughtful, informed changes that allow us to serve the island effectively now and into the future.”
