Post Box Network Update: Shaping a Sustainable Future for Postal Services
We’ve confirmed that our island-wide network of post boxes will be reduced from 142 to 59, following a public consultation. This decision is part of our wider transformation programme, designed to ensure that our postal services remain efficient, sustainable, and fit for the future.
The consultation ran from 15 August to 12 September and invited feedback on the proposed closure of up to 96 boxes. We received more than 500 responses through paper forms, emails, phone calls, and our online consultation form. Thanks to this valuable input, we’ve decided to retain 14 of the boxes that were originally earmarked for closure, helping to maintain access in key locations across the island.
Our Chief Executive, Steve Sheridan, said: “We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to share their views during the consultation. Every response was carefully considered and played a key role in shaping the final decision. We believe the revised network offers a sensible balance between customer accessibility and operational efficiency, ensuring postal services remain sustainable for the future.”
Nearly 30% of respondents expressed concern about the heritage and landmark value of Guernsey’s iconic post boxes. We understand how important the blue Guernsey post box is to our island’s heritage, and we’re committed to preserving that legacy. As part of this, we’ll be replacing the timed collection plates with plaques that share the historical stories behind selected boxes—such as the one at Fort Road, which still bears visible damage from bullet holes during the Occupation. These stories are an important part of our community’s history, and we want to ensure they’re not lost.
Just under 60% of respondents raised concerns about the convenience and accessibility of their nearest post box. In response, we’ve retained over a third of the boxes linked to those concerns. Even where fewer individual responses were received, we listened carefully—such as in the case of Box 125 at The Longstore, which was highlighted for its 24-hour accessibility.
We’re also making some location-specific changes:
- Box 139 on Jerbourg Road will be relocated to Manor Stores to improve accessibility in that area.
- Following strong feedback from residents near Box 95 on Rocquaine Road, we’ve decided not to proceed with its relocation, and the box will remain in its current position.
- For Box 115 at Rue Sauvage, we were unable to secure the preferred relocation site, so the box will remain in place for now.
Letter volumes in Guernsey have declined by nearly 60% over the last 10 years, including a 15% drop compared to last year alone. This trend reflects changes in consumer behaviour seen across the UK and other jurisdictions, and it’s driving postal operators like us to reassess infrastructure and adapt to evolving needs.
You can view the results of consultation in the panel to the left. This sets out the list of proposed boxes for closure and confirms whether each box will remain open or closed.
You can view the complete list of post boxes in our network here from Monday, 3 November.
All remaining post boxes will have updated collection times clearly displayed, effective from Monday, 3 November. Boxes scheduled for closure will be sealed during the same week.
