This 1934 George V post box was damaged during an RAF raid on Fort George in WWII 03-05 June 1944. These allied attacks were a crucial effort to destroy the German radar installations before the D-Day invasion. The raid caused significant damage to the post box, the house directly behind it and other houses in the area. The final raid resulted in the death of Flight Lieutenant John Saville of the Royal Canadian Air Force, over Havelet Bay.
The surviving impact, echoed in wartime scars around the area and on the concrete pillar housing the post box, forms an important reminder of this difficult period and contributes to the wider story of the raid and its local effects.
